About Us

Halm’s co-founder and owner Brad Halm has always been inspired by good food, family, and farming. He got his start growing vegetables on organic farms in Ohio and Pennsylvania, then moved to Seattle to start the nationally acclaimed Seattle Urban Farm Company. He even wrote two books about organic vegetable gardening: Food Grown Right, In Your Backyard and High Yield Vegetable Gardening.

Ready for a new challenge, Brad founded Halm’s in 2017 with his family’s horseradish sauce as it’s signature product. Our headquarters and home farm are located in Winthrop, WA in the beautiful Methow Valley.

Our Story

We believe our horseradish sauce is the finest in the world. It’s because our recipe is a little different than your average horseradish sauce recipe. We have my grandmother, Casmiera (Kay) O’Brien (born Casmiera Brzyski) to thank for it. I always knew her as Busia, which she strangely preferred to be called instead of Babcia, the common Polish word for grandmother.

The recipe was passed on to Busia from her mother (my pra-babcia, or great-grandmother), Marie Brzyski. The Brzyski family emigrated from Poland to the United States during World War II to escape the Nazi occupation, and they brought the recipe with them. Years later, Brad learned the recipe from his mother, Suzanne Halm.

Growing up, I remember eating Busia’s horseradish sauce with the most amazing polish food. We’d spread it on homemade kielbasa, on hard-boiled eggs at Easter, and mixed into borscht (a brothy beet soup) for Christmas Eve dinner. After a visit with Busia, we take home jars and spread it on sandwiches, crackers, and anything else that happened to be in the kitchen.

Making horseradish sauce has been a tradition in the Halm household for decades and we are now honored to make the sauce for you. We strive to run our business with the ethics that Busia taught us- hard work, thrift, and love. We hope you enjoy!
